In the early 1600s, a spitz type breed was developed – the Norrbottenspets. This breed is also known as Nordic Spitz and Pohjanpystykorva in its country of origin. This ancient breed was honored by being named as the national dog of Sweden. Highly valued for its great endurance, this breed was claimed by Sweden and Finland as their own. The dog is rather small but it has a well muscled compact body.
A Norrbottenspets square shaped body is thickly covered with close fitting soft fur. Beautiful white fur with red and brown markings protects the dog from extremely hot and cold temperatures. The luxuriously furred tail that curls loosely over the back is a one of the breeds attention-getting characteristics.
This dog breed was purposely developed to be an all around farm dog but it has evolved into an outstanding hunting dog as well. In spite of the small size, the dog is acclaimed for being an outstanding hunter because of its extraordinary courage and cunning hunting abilities. Apart from the high level of intelligence, the dog is also eager to please its people thus training geared to improve the inborn hunting abilities will never be an owner’s problem .
A Norrbottenspets is both a sight and scent hunter unlike other breeds of hounds that are either scent or sight hunters. The dog does not have a foxy appearance but it is described so because it exhibits its cunning nature when hunting. As soon as the dog is released in the hunting area, it will use it senses to flush and chase the game. Once an animal is cornered, the dog would start to bark rapidly purportedly to confuse the game and to cover the sounds made by the approaching hunter.
This rather small dog has a big personality. The affectionate nature makes this breed a wise choice for older couples in need of companionship and security. The Norrbottenspets is a vivacious, energetic and playful dog that bonds closely with their human family. With these qualities, the dog can participate in all the activities of the family.
The breed was in fact named as one the 10 top breeds acclaimed for their gentleness with children. Loving and kind, a Norrbottenspets will exhibit a stable temperament in any situation. Gentle and very patient, the dog will not be aggressive if teased or harassed by the children . This dog is fairly healthy and would give the family about 20 years of affectionate and loyal companionship.
