First Steps For Puppy Obedience Training

When you bring your new puppy home for the first time, training him may be the furthest thing from your mind. However, it should be a top priority, and it can be a bit overwhelming.

To ensure that your puppy is trained properly, you might consider paying for professional obedience training. This way, you know that the amount of attention required is given to the newest member of your family.

From the outset, it is important that you start training your puppy, especially in the house training dogs department. This can be one of the most difficult things when it comes to owning a new dog.

Sometimes, small dogs or male pets can be harder to train than their counterparts. Using pads for this step in their training is highly recommended.

If you find that your puppy will not use the pad alone, you can always try putting a sheet of newsprint on top of the pad. Make sure you put the pad and newspaper in the room of your house that you want him to go.

If it is near the door, your dog will be able to equate going outside with his need to urinate.

Of course, some accidents are bound to occur. Simply let your pet know he is doing something he should not be doing and then take him outside right away.

If you can train your puppy to scratch the door when he needs to go out, you will help establish a routine that will serve to avoid accidents.

Light disciplinary measures might be required; they can be as simple as a small spray of water or a swat with a rolled newspaper. This won’t hurt them, but will startle them and keep this behavior in mind.

Puppies naturally want to chew things, so giving him lots of toys or other objects will help him stay away from your furniture or power cords.

Another thing that your puppy will expect from you is the chance to get plenty of physical exercise. Walking in the neighborhood is the perfect way to train him on a leash.

Plan on using a short leash so that your grip is good and you have the most control. You can lessen your grip and let the leash go a bit once he gets used to being on the leash.

There are some things that are best left to the professionals, especially if your puppy ends up showing an aggressive side.

Both you and your new four-legged friend will benefit from obedience training.

Overall, taking care of a new pet properly is the owner’s responsibility, and this can include keeping up with their veterinarian visits and grooming. They need their coats and teeth brushed, and you should keep their nails trimmed.

By neglecting your pets’ dental needs, you are asking for problems.

Many puppies crave attention and tend to be overly friendly, jumping up on anyone who walks through the door. You can discourage this behavior by putting your knee in his way and by backing him up.
