Attracting The Lesser Goldfinch To Your Backyard Or Garden

This bird will obtain a portion of their food from bird feeders. If you install, for example, a tube bird feeder in your backyard, and you supply it with the right type of food, you may see this small bird show up more frequently. You will notice the lesser goldfinch by color. The male of the species is a bright yellow color with black wing and tail feathers during the spring months. The females are a duller color, but they still have a pointed but notched tail and conical bill. The only way to tell these birds from the American goldfinch is to look at their tail. Among other attributes, the Lesser Goldfinch does not have white-colored feathers at the base of its tail.

How to Attract the Lesser Goldfinch
To draw the lesser goldfinch in to your backyard, supply the right type of food in the right bird feeder. In terms of food, these birds prefer birdfeeders that are easy to get into and those that are filled with seeds. The Lesser Goldfinch will not typically eat just bird seeds,. They must also have a portion of arthropods. They are fond of caterpillars and also like to devour larva procured from trees and fruit. Using the right bird seed will help to attract these birds to your yard or garden.

Select a tube bird feeder to lure the Lesser Goldfinch. These animals are attracted to areas where they have a place to sit. Most often, they are social birds, which mean they will eat alongside each other. They become less social and more combative during breeding season though. The tube bird feeder allows them to share this type of meal.

Tips for Success
Check out the following tips that will help you to attract the lesser goldfinch to your backyard.
1.    Invest in a tube bird feeder and a feeder pole. Place it in an area that is some distance from regular human traffic.
2.    The bird does not use trees as much as its cousins do, but it does prefer to remain within a few second’s flight from trees when accessing its food.
3.Utilize black-oil sunflower seeds or nyjer seed. Keep the seeds readily available. If the tube bird feeder is empty, the bird may look for another home.
Also, keep in mind that these birds are attracted to birdbaths. The bird bath should be positioned a few feet away from their food source. Having a birdbath and feeder in your yard will allow you to observe the birds for longer periods of time. What is nice is that these birds are happy to show themselves if they become accustomed to the presence of humans, though they will not allow you to feed them directly nor interact with them.
